  1. Be careful with the brown rice, it can have a shelf life of less than six months. Whole-grain (brown, red, or black) rice deteriorates faster than milled rice (white, parboiled or pre-cooked) because of the oils in its natural bran layer. When stored in an airtight container, whole-grain rice has a shelf life of 6 months.May 27, 2015

  2. Brown rice does not keep as long as white rice because of the natural oil which turns rancid after a time. We are very leery of eating any fish from the Pacific Ocean because of the after effects of the radiation spill from Japan. Bulk nuts are fine but need to be vacuum packed or frozen to prevent them from turning rancid as well. Dried beans are awesome but people will get very tired of them fairly quickly. Find recipes which you can customize to mitigate the ‘bean fatigue’ which will happen to all of us. Store lots of herbs and spices which will help flavor everything.
